What Is Political Islam?

• Political Islam is a political movement born in the 1940s as a reaction to foreign domination and political corruption

• It blames the 200 years of humiliation suffered by Muslims on their failure to live by the tenets of the Koran and Islamic traditions

• It uses a strict interpretation of Islamic law, the Sharia, as a weapon of political control

 

• Also known as Islamic fundamentalism, Militant Islam or Islamism

• Its followers are known as Islamic fundamentalists, Islamic militants or Islamists
