Equality, Sharia Style

Under Sharia Law:

    • A Muslim man is equal to a Muslim man

    • A Muslim woman is equal to a Muslim woman

    • An unbeliever is equal to an unbeliever

But the law is different for each:

      • There are different laws for men and women

      • Different laws for Muslims and unbelievers

    • Women are unequal before the law, lack freedom of choice over marriage and travel, and lack economic independence

‘The Universal Declaration of Human Rights was for complete equality between men and women. For us, women are equal to men in law, but they are not the same as men, and they can’t be allowed to wander around freely in the streets like some kind of animal’

    Muhammad Naceri, a member of
    Morocco Council of Religious Scholars
